Zaccho Dance Theatre is proud to be housed in Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP), since 1989. In 1990, Artistic Director Joanna Haigood founded Zaccho’s Youth Performing Arts Program (YPAP) and Zaccho Youth Company (ZYC), which have served nearly 7,000 BVHP youth to date. All arts programming is free to schools, partner sites, youth and families.
Joanna Haigood has created aerial, site-specific and contemporary dance work since 1980, using natural, architectural, and cultural landscapes as creative points of departure. Her stages range from urban streets to historic landmarks. Commissioned by institutions including Jacob’s Pillow, Walker Art Center, and Festival d’Avignon, her work bridges art and environment. Honors include the Guggenheim, Doris Duke, and Herb Alpert Awards. A dedicated mentor, Joanna has taught at Spelman College, Stanford, Trinity Laban, and internationally at major arts institutions. Her work reflects a deep commitment to place, community, and the expressive power of movement across cultures and contexts.
